Google Ads or SEO? How to split your promotion budget
Paid ads bring results quickly, while SEO builds something that lasts. The right question is not which is better, but how to split the budget depending on the stage your business is in.
What each does, in two sentences
Google Ads puts you in front of people searching right now, as long as you pay. SEO lifts you in the unpaid results; it takes time, but visits don’t cost per click.
When it makes sense to start with ads
- You have a seasonal offer or a launch with a short deadline.
- You want to quickly test which messages and services attract requests.
- The site is new and doesn’t have rankings yet.
When it makes sense to focus on SEO
- There are many searches in your field and customers compare before deciding.
- The cost per click in ads is high and your margin doesn’t allow waste.
- You want stable visibility that doesn’t disappear the day you stop the budget.
A split that works at the start
Many companies start with a larger share on ads, for data and quick requests, and gradually move part of the budget to SEO and content as results come in. Ad data also tells you which keywords bring customers, and SEO can then work them over the long term.
Any split should be checked monthly: if a channel brings cheaper requests, it deserves more budget.
Frequently asked questions
Can I stop the ads once I have good rankings in Google?
You can reduce the budget, but first check what happens to requests. For many searches, a double presence (ad and organic result) brings more than either one alone.
Which brings customers faster?
Ads. SEO usually takes a few months to show visible results.
Can I combine the two?
Yes, and it’s recommended: ads bring data quickly, SEO reduces dependence on budget.
